EXCERPT: ..... In the meetups I host, and “host” is the word I like to use as opposed to run, or operate, there is what I would call “ONE MINUTE of DEMOCRACY”. All the work and preparation to set up the meetup, invite people, pay for it, create content will fall on your shoulders. Don’t expect to share the work – the committee system doesn’t work and that’s not what meetup members want. If you are prepared to be subject-focused and not your product or company focused, the meetup will be a success! At the end of every meetup, its time for ONE MINUTE of DEMOCRACY. Ask group members about how its going? And, when would they like to meet next etc. Get some feedback. That will help you run a better meetup with higher levels of satisfaction. Every member gets to rate the meetup - you let them leave with the feeling that they are getting great value but also participating in the direction of the meetup group. When they get home, an email from meetup is waiting for them in their inbox, asking them to rate the meetup – What’s the last thing they remember? Everyone is welcome to come out to a meetup, and this carries with it some risk. You need to be prepared to set rules and enforce them Let me explain. If you go down the path of a soft sell approach and focus on content and subject matter, you are restricting yourself to some extent, so you can’t allow blatant pitches or selling from others, especially if its competitive to what you sell. I setup rules and reinforce them every meetup so the new members are oriented to how things work. If the new members see the veterans of the group accepting the rules, they quickly adopt them too! This is easier than relying on the good manners or common sense of meetup members. At meetups you will have real experts participating. They may be industry people, or hobbyists. Be prepared – you will not be the smartest person in the room all the time. You don’t have to be the smartest, just be the best organizer. .....
